First post

Slow news: you're alive.  It's amazing.  Did you forget?  I usually do.

Clean water runs through my tap.  Another transparent miracle.  Life on Earth: water moving around.  Through the sky, the rivers, the ocean, the plants, our bodies, animal bodies.  Circulating like blood: the blue blood of the blue planet.  How easily overlooked when we seldom go thirsty, here in the West.

I started this blog after seeing a documentary, Sweet Crude, about the struggles of an organized group of Nigerian villagers intent on ridding their land of the major oil companies who have been responsible for decades of pollution.  Strong acid rain, lack of fish, lack of game, dirty, oily water, spoiled beaches...  These people were amazingly patient, strong, resilient, wise and disciplined.  It was humbling to see their efforts which put their own lives at risk.  And in a hilarious but very sad scene, the viewer learns that the only angle major western media outlets are willing to see is: rebels, terrorists, a threat to oil prices, possible Al-Qaeda connections (absurd).

Are we ready to see how blind we are?  I know there are media outlets (Epoch Times for example) which are more devoted to actual journalism, and reporting what's important...  I think I'll seek some of these out.

I had an epiphany, though, once: "the world doesn't need you to change it."  It was in the middle of a Massive Attack concert.  A peace came with that knowledge.  So while I may seek out important slow news (good and bad), I will try to remind myself (and you if anyone reads this!) of a basic thing.

Life is here, it's a miracle.
